KZF's Indoor Aquatic Center at Ft. Bliss to provide training and fun

East Bliss will get three swimming pools in a new indoor aquatic center that's designed to help meet the needs of the growing post. The new aquatic center will include an Olympic-size pool, a deep-water diving pool and a multipurpose pool. Ground was broken for the new aquatic center Nov. 29, and construction should begin in January, he said. The main purpose is to provide training for soldiers, but the center will also be used for recreation for soldiers, their families, military retirees and civilian employees at the post. It will cost about $15.5M to build and could be finished by February or March 2013, Hildreth said. Money for the center was allocated last year, he added. The 50,000-square-foot aquatic center will be built next to the Sgt. Joshua W. Soto Physical Fitness Center and will be the final piece of the main part of the East Bliss Town Center. Besides the gym, the town center contains a mini-mall that's been open for several months and a community activity center that's being built and should be open by the spring of 2012. The new center will have a 50-meter Olympic pool, which will have a moveable bulkhead to allow for multiple activities. If the bulkhead is placed in the middle, it will create 16 lanes of 25 meters each. The pool will also be used for competitive swimming, intramural inner-tube water polo, water volleyball, water aerobics, kayaking and other activities. A deep-water diving tank will have a 3-meter platform and two 1-meter diving boards. It will be used for anti-drowning troop training, but it can also be used for scuba classes and recreational diving. The third pool will also have multiple uses. It will have a "zero-depth" sloped entry. It will range from 4 feet to 8 feet deep. Its core mission is to support what's called Shallow Water Egress Training, in which soldiers learn what to do if their Humvee or other military vehicle ends up in the water. It can also quickly heat up to 92 degrees and be used for therapy for wounded soldiers. It will have a basketball shooting area, a 12-foot climbing wall and the capability for water volleyball. The aquatic center is being designed to be flexible and support as many different programs as possible, Hildreth said. As new training and fitness trends develop, the pools can be adapted to meet them, he said. Megen Construction of Cincinnati is the prime contractor. KZF Design, also of Cincinnati, is doing the design work. Source: El Paso Times, Posted: 12/16/2011 12:00:00 AM MST

Downtown Cincinnati design districts taking shape

Cincinnati has a well-established design district. Major design and branding firms such as KZF Design sport stylish offices along 8th Street northwest of downtown in the 8th Street Design District. But a few minutes' walk north of this district lies another stretch that appears to be on its way to becoming a design district of a different type. The storefronts along Main Street in Over-the-Rhine are rapidly filling up with ventures spearheaded by young design professionals, and the neighborhood appears to be welcoming them with open arms.

KZF helps City of North Vernon, IN win multi-million-dollar Stellar Communities grant

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman announced today the Greencastle and North Vernon will be the pilot communities for the new multi-year, multi-million-dollar Stellar Communities program. Forty-two communities submitted proposals to become a pilot community. After scoring the plans, the top twelve communities were asked to submit more details, and site visits were conducted by staff from each agency. Lt. Governor Skillman intends to continue Stellar Communities next year, and cities that did not win this year may re-apply for future rounds. North Vernon, the only city between Muscatatuck Urban Training Center and Interstate 65, will use their funds to become an economic hub for the defense industry. Planned improvements include a new event center, a pedestrian plaza, improvements to the Irish Hill neighborhood, and creating more commercial opportunities on Main Street. Lt. Governor Skillman will hold a celebration in North Vernon on Friday. Our region is not able to take full advantage of Muscatatuck without a vibrant North Vernon," Mayor Harold "Soup" Campbell said. "Without Stellar Communities, we would certainly lose out on millions of dollars of economic activity." Funding for the initiatives comes from multiple existing federal funds. State agencies will continue to offer grant programs to local units of government not participating in Stellar Communities. Details on the community celebrations will be announced later this week.

KZF helps student-cadets "hone their skills" through UC ROTC/SAME Student Chapter training session

The Bearcat Battalion, the University of Cincinnati's ROTC program, sent its troops through the muddy hills of Mt. Airy Forest Saturday afternoon for a test on their land navigation skills. Student-cadets trudged through the woodlands to hone their knowledge of land navigation, a military discipline consisting of navigation through the use of maps, compasses and terrain recognition. The student-cadets traversed most of the park as they worked through both day and night navigation courses seeking alphanumeric wooden signs, denoting their success in training. "We do [navigation training] five times total for the year," said Lt. Col. Randy Judd, leader of the Bearcat Battalion and military science professor at UC. "It helps the cadets practice their leadership. It's a confidence-building exercise." Cadets were joined by members of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) and the American Veterans (AMVETS) for the day as well. "Any opportunity to get out and work with the cadets is a great thing," said Meg Mueller of KZF Design, head of the SAME Cincinnati chapter.
