Scope:
KZF Design introduced natural light into this 19th-century museum to reconnect it with the city, emphasize focal points, and lead visitors through the new Cincinnati Wing – earning an Honor Award from AIA, Cincinnati Chapter.

Project description:
Established in 1881, the Cincinnati Art Museum is one of the country’s oldest art institutions, permanently housing more than 80,000 works of art. It has undergone numerous additions and renovations over the years to keep up with its growing collections.

The Museum chose KZF as the design architect and engineer for renovating 26,000 square feet of exhibit and garden café space in the museum’s south section. This new Cincinnati Wing is devoted to Cincinnati artists, stressing the city’s rich art history. The garden café stretches into an existing courtyard.

KZF introduced natural daylight to create a distinctive setting – overlooking the city’s landmark Eden Park – to reconnect the museum to the community, and to highlight key focal points in the museum. By engaging and reinforcing these critical paths, each visitor can guide him or herself through the wing, gaining control over the experience.

The American Institute of Architects, Cincinnati Chapter, presented its highest award – an Honor Award – for the KZF-designed renovation in 2003.
