KZF Design received the Globe Award by the American Road and Transportation Development Foundation Builders (ARTBA) for this intricate highway project.
Project description:
The Butler County Veterans Highway (formerly the Michael A. Fox Highway) stretches 10.7 miles westbound through Butler County from I-75 to the city of Hamilton. KZF designed the first two sections (8.7) miles of the four-lane divided highway.
The project included two interchanges, five twin bridges (one of which is 1,400 feet long), three single bridges, box culverts, continuous urban and full interchange lighting, signage and signal plans, over 200 parcel right-of-way plans, design of nearly seven miles of noise barrier and plans for landscaping, water, gas and sanitary relocation.
Environmental highlights include a park-and-pool lot to reduce vehicular traffic, landscaping and a 42-acre wetlands park. The park, which also incorporates hike and bike trails, was created not only to reestablish the ecosystem that was destroyed during highway construction, but also to promote the community’s interaction with their natural environment.
This project won KZF Design an award by ARTBA, whose goal is to celebrate those who help reduce the problems caused by urban sprawl.
