Scope:
KZF worked with renowned architect and UC alumnus Michael Graves on this critically-sited building to make it the focal point of the campus.

Project description:
The Engineering and Research Center at the University of Cincinnati, completed in 1995, includes teaching and research laboratories, as well as support space at an important gateway site on the campus. The building boldly meets the contextual challenge of a difficult and constrained site, accommodating existing roadways, paths, steps and grades and also connecting to Rhodes Hall, which is part of the College of Engineering.

The 175,000-square-foot building contains six stories above ground and one below. Included are 110 laboratories, 89 faculty offices, 200 graduate student offices and 13 seminar/lounge/conference rooms. The facility houses interdisciplinary research projects in microelectronics, computing, environmental, materials, aerospace and biosciences, as well as instructional programs for the science and engineering departments.

KZF Design was the principal architect/engineer and was responsible for all project management, engineering and architectural construction documents. Internationally-renowned architect Michael Graves was the design architect, and Smith, Hinchman & Grylls Associates, Inc. provided the programming and laboratory design. Monarch Construction was the general contractor.

"As Dean of UC's College of Engineering throughout the entire design and construction process [of University of Cincinnati’s Engineering Research Center], I can vouch for the technical and management leadership KZF displayed in directing a comprehensive team of design professionals...I would enthusiastically recommend KZF to anyone."
