Scope:
KZF’s design for this projected earned them a 2000 Merit Award from the AIA Ohio chapter as well as a 1999 Honor Award from the AIA Cincinnati chapter.
Project description:
After designing the original 1,800-car, post-tensioned concrete Eden Avenue parking garage on the University of Cincinnati’s East Campus, KZF was asked to design an 810-car addition to the garage, as well as a pedestrian/utility bridge replacement.
The garage addition and bridge helps to transform Eden Avenue from a service alley to the main street of the medical campus. The garage includes partial brick veneer sheaths which are “clipped” on to deep concrete piers along the two street faces. The material, rhythm and visual density strengthen the street edge while maintaining openness for light and air. Other design elements, such as a tube grid with perforated screens, diagonal rods and light shelves provide lightness and detail to a long elevation. In addition, circular stair towers and a rotated elevator tower showcase people and movement while anchoring and animating the overall grid.
Equally appealing, the bridge contains point supported glass in a repeating pattern of sizes and densities which create and animated veil set well outboard of the floor and roof structure.
